Why we use affiliate links
WatchingAbroad is an independent guide. Maintaining this site — writing detailed guides, testing VPNs and Smart DNS services, keeping content up to date — takes time and resources. Affiliate commissions are our primary funding model, allowing us to keep the site free of intrusive ads and paywalls.
How affiliate links work
When you click an affiliate link on WatchingAbroad, you are redirected to the service provider's website. A small tracking identifier is placed in the URL so the provider knows you came from our site. If you then make a purchase (usually a subscription), the provider pays us a commission — typically a percentage of the sale price or a fixed fee.
Important: The price you pay is exactly the same whether you use our affiliate link or go directly to the provider's website. Using our link does not cost you anything extra.
Types of affiliate relationships
Direct affiliate programs
Some services we recommend have their own in-house affiliate programs. We apply directly and receive commission per the provider's standard terms.
Affiliate networks (Impact, CJ, Awin)
Many VPN and streaming services operate through affiliate networks like Impact Radius, CJ Affiliate (formerly Commission Junction), or Awin. These platforms handle tracking, reporting, and payout on behalf of the merchant.
Commission structures
- Revenue share: A percentage of the subscription value (typically 30–40% recurring).
- First-month commission: Up to 100% of the first month's payment, with lower or no recurring commission.
- Fixed fee: A one-time payment per sale (less common in this space).
Editorial independence
Commission structures and affiliate relationships do not influence our recommendations. Every service we write about is tested and evaluated based on:
- Actual performance for watching TV abroad (streaming access, speed, reliability)
- Device compatibility (Apple TV, Fire TV, routers, smart TVs, phones, browsers)
- Privacy and security characteristics
- Value for money and customer support quality
We will clearly mark any content that contains affiliate links and will never present affiliate promotions as independent editorial content without clear disclosure.
Our disclosure practices
To comply with EU consumer protection law (UCPD 2005/29/EC) and Danish marketing law (Markedsføringsloven §6), we follow these disclosure rules:
- Global disclosure — Every page on this site includes an affiliate disclosure statement in the footer.
- Inline disclosure — Where affiliate links appear in content, we add a visible disclosure near those links.
- Dedicated disclosure page — This page provides a full explanation of our affiliate practices (you are reading it now).
- Sponsored content — Any sponsored content or paid placements will be clearly labeled as such.
- No misinformation — We will never claim a tool "always works" or "unblocks any service" — streaming access is never guaranteed.
Current affiliate partners
The following services have active affiliate relationships with WatchingAbroad. This list will be updated as new programs are approved.
No affiliate programs are active yet — this site is in early launch stage. This section will be updated when the first affiliate partnership goes live.
Cookie and tracking
Affiliate links use tracking cookies set by the affiliate network or merchant. These cookies are typically session-based or last 30–90 days. If you purchase within the cookie window, we earn commission on that sale. We do not set our own tracking cookies beyond what is necessary for affiliate link functionality.
For more detail on how we handle data, please see our privacy policy (coming soon).
